No Film Week: Mar. 9-15

Bloodshot is coming out this week and guys, superheroes just got an upgrade. Vin Diesel is back, baby, as a super-soldier with super-blood. Which is good, because it looks like there’s a real bad boy out there with a spider-mech suit, like a real Doc Ock over here. Now that I’m actually thinking about it, “Doc Ock” is some real lazy writing, Stan Lee. He’s a doctor with 8 arms? That’s your pitch? “Umm, his name is Señor Centaur...he is an adult man with four robo-hooves.” Actually, never mind, that is pretty good. I guess the formula works. Anyways, movies:

Monday, Mar. 9:

  • Ghost in the Shell- 6:45pm- Lots of talking and spider-tanks in this anime classic. No ScarJo, though. Next time…...next time….. Anthology Film Archives

  • Get Shorty + Live Running Commentary by Director- 7pm- Barry Levinson is going on a book tour, and he’s selling those bad boys the only way he knows how. Giving you a live director’s commentary of Get Shorty. Which is actually something I definitely want. Alamo Drafthouse

  • Suspicion- 10pm- Cary Grant's darkest Hitchcock role- he’s a con artist gaslighting his new wife and maybe wants to kill her for her money. Very sus. Film Forum

Tuesday, Mar. 10:

  • The Net in 35mm- 6:30pm- Sandra Bullock’s first starring role and she’s a real keyboard cowboy in this one. She’s fully hacked into the mainframe and surfing the information superhighway. This is a great movie. Anthology Film Archives

  • Rebecca + Q&A with Co-Writer- 7:30pm- The first collaboration between Alfred Hitchcock and super-producer David O. Selznick- a psychological romance about a widower and his new wife and the looming presence of his deceased former wife. Like if Crimson Peak was good. Nitehawk Prospect Park

  • Off Frame AKA Revolution Until Victory- 7pm- Documentary about the history of Palestinian resistance that features rare footage shot by the media wing of the Palestinian Film Unit. BAM

Wednesday, Mar. 11:

  • Bacurau + Q&A with Directors- 6:45pm- Festival hit about a small Brazilian village that is minding its own business when Udo Kier leads a band of mercenaries into it, and does...whatever Udo Kier likes to do? Probably something with sexy Frankensteins. IFC Center

  • Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands + Q&A with Star- 7pm- Brazilian legend, Sonia Braga’s smash hit about a widow who remarries, only to see her dead husband come back as a horny spirit. Brazil is fun. Quad Cinema

  • Mandy- 7pm- There’s a scene in this movie, where Nicolas Cage forges an axe, so he can kill a murderous cult that attacked his wife. This is the pure shit. Roxy Cinema

Thursday, Mar. 12:

  • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo- 7pm- David Fincher is America’s number one director for making really well-made movies out of books that people buy at airports. It’s a valuable skill. MoMA

  • Surf Nazis Must Die in 35mm- 9:30pm- Troma is taking a stand against all Aquatic Aryans, in this, an incredibly sensitive portrayal of a post-apocalypse that has left all of California’s bodacious waves under the control of the Surf Reich. Nitehawk Williamsburg

  • Cry-Baby- 10:30pm- Johnny Depp’s best movie and proof that John Waters can make a mainstream-ish movie without losing that John Waters magic. I’m looking at you, Hatchet-face. Metrograph

Friday, Mar. 13:

Saturday, Mar. 14:

  • Raging Bull + Q&A with Editor- 11am- One of Martin Scorsese’s true masterpieces, plus a Q&A with the apparently genius editor, because she put this scene together. Nitehawk Prospect Park

  • Freak Orlando- 5:30pm- I’ve never heard of this movie before, but damn it’s called Freak Orlando and it looks wild. You crazy for this one, Ulrike Ottinger. Metrograph

  • The Roads Not Taken + Q&A with Director- 7:15pm- Elle Fanning watches over her dad, Javier Bardem, as he floats in and out of fantasies about other lives he could have led, full of fun haircuts no doubt. Angelika

Sunday, Mar. 15:

  • Tron + Q&A with Composer- 10:45am- Jeff Bridges gets really into Frogger or some other boomer shit or whatever. Plus a Q&A with the composer, who also did the scores to A Clockwork Orange and The Shining. She was also one of the first public figures to transition genders, in the early 70s, so probably an amazing person to hear from. Nitehawk Williamsburg

  • Marx Brothers in Go West in 35mm- 11am- Oh, those dang Marx boys are up to their old tricks again. They’re paving the way for all of our western-comedy classics, like Blazing Saddles, Back to the Future Part 3, and A Million Ways to Die in the West. Thanks Marx Brothers! Film Forum

  • Love is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon- 5pm- Daniel Craig and Derek Jacobi are lovers and also Derek Jacobi is Francis Bacon. Why am I just now hearing about this movie? MoMA
