No Film Week: Jan. 20-26

The Oscar nominations got released- GUYS- I SAW CATS. It is insane. This movie. Goddamn. It was what we thought it was. I can’t stop myself from telling people about Skimbleshanks, the tap-dancing railway cat, even though they clearly don’t care. But they’re wrong. We should all care about Skimbleshanks, the tap-dancing railway cat. He’s like a sexy, dancing, Super Mario/cat mutant with pizazz to spare. Wow. Here’s what else is happening (Macavity!):

Series:

Monday, Jan. 20:

  • The Masque of the Red Death in 35mm- 6:30pm- Roger Corman, Vincent Price, Edgar Allen Poe, Cinema Classic. MoMA

  • I Walked with a Zombie in 35mm- 7:30pm- One of the first zombie movies ever made from the director of Cat People, Jacques Tourneur. And yes, the voodoo is problematic. Quad Cinema

  • The Canyons- 9:45pm- We knew it wasn’t gonna end well for Paul Schrader or Bret Easton Ellis. Also, Gus Van Sant is in this movie? Metrograph

Tuesday, Jan. 21:

  • Picnic at Hanging Rock in 35mm- 8:45pm- Peter Weir’s Australian New Wave classic about a group of schoolgirls and a teacher who definitely disappeared during a picnic and no one has any doubts that this did actually happen. Quad Cinema

  • Film Feast: Let the Right One In- 7:15pm- One of the best vampire movies paired with a five course meal for only $95? In this economy? You can’t afford not to go! Nitehawk Prospect Park

  • The Story of a Three-Day Pass- 7:30pm- Melvin Van Peebles first film- 3 years before Sweet Sweetback- that follows a romance between an African-American GI and a French woman. FIAF

Wednesday, Jan. 22:

  • Color Out of Space- 7pm- Insane(?) director Richard Stanley teams up with insane(?) actor Nicolas Cage for this H.P. Lovecraft adaptation. This sneak peek showing also has a taped Q&A with them, where they probably double-down on insane stuff. IFC Center

  • Film Feast: Sleepless in Seattle- 7pm- Another film feast, but this one with America’s sweethearts, Tom and Meg, and America’s sweetbeard, the James Beard Foundation. Nitehawk Williamsburg

  • Bringing Out the Dead in 35mm- 7:30pm- Nic Cage is a very well balanced EMT in Scorsese and Schrader’s third and last collaboration. Roxy Cinema

Thursday, Jan. 23:

  • Champagne Cinema: Troop Beverly Hills Quote-Along- 7pm- I may be a beginner at some things, but I’ve got a black belt in shopping! Alamo Drafthouse

  • Payday- 7:30pm- Rip Torn puts his wild charm on full display as a country singer/terrible person living each day like it’s his last and everyone else’s last. Also, all his songs are written by Shel Silverstein. Spectacle Theater

  • Shouting at the Screen- 9:30pm- No matter what movie Wyatt Cenac and Donwill pick, you have to promise to bring the heat. Shouting heat. Alamo Drafthouse

Friday, Jan. 24:

  • The Unbelievable Truth + Q&A with Director- 6:30pm- Hal Hartley will both show and tell his debut film, about a romance between a model and ex-con in Long Island. Metrograph

  • Polyester- 7pm- MoMA is doing this right and showing this movie the way it was meant to be seen- in fucking Odorama. Hell yeah. MoMA

  • Lady Vengeance- 12:10am- The third part of Chan-wook Park’s vengeance trilogy doesn’t pull any punches about what it thinks about child murderers. It. Does. Not. Like. Them. Nitehawk Williamsburg

Saturday, Jan. 25:

  • The Monster Squad- 5:30pm- The wolfman’s got nards! Roxy Cinema

  • Just Another Girl on the I.R.T. + Q&A with Director- 5:35pm- Leslie Harris wrote and directed this 90s coming-of-age story about a black high school junior in Brooklyn trying to leave her neighborhood. I have no idea why they stopped making movies like this after the 90s. Film Forum

  • My Brother’s Wedding- 6:30pm- Killer of Sheep director Charles Burnett’s long lost movie (which led to his bankruptcy) made in 1983 but finally released in 2007. Which is really sad, because Charles Burnett is amazing. MoMA

Sunday, Jan. 26:

What Else is Playing:

  • Atlantics

  • Citizen K

  • A Hidden Life

  • Les Miserables

  • Little Women

  • Marriage Story

  • Mephisto

  • Pain & Glory

  • Parasite

  • The Two Popes

  • Uncut Gems

  • The White Sheik

  • Zombi Child

What to Plan on:

There’s no such thing as a bad fashion documentary (except for Very Ralph) and there’s another good looking one coming out soon: The Times of Bill Cunningham. Cunningham was a fashion designer, writer, then an incredibly talented New York Times fashion photographer. City Cinemas is doing 3 Q&As for this film- Feb. 14 with the director and Andre Leon Talley, Feb. 15 with the director and model Bethann Hardison, and Feb. 16 with the director. These should be fun as hell and much better than Very Ralph.
